Next-Generation Recycled Design at Aupark Bratislava Shopping Center

An information desk as an architectural manifesto of sustainability
Aupark Bratislava is one of the most prominent shopping hubs in Slovakia – and now also home to a groundbreaking architectural project made from recycled plastic. The information desk, located right at the main entrance, represents a harmonious blend of design, sustainability, and innovative material from the Plastic guys studio.
The shape and spatial design were developed by architect Marek Teplický and sculptor Peter Machata, who together redefined the concept of an information point – not just as a functional element, but as a visually striking and aesthetically valuable part of the interior.
Organic form. Local material. Circular logic.
The information desk consists of two main components – an outer shell made from white recycled plastic and an inner working counter made from translucent material. Both parts were crafted from PET recycled sheets produced in our Brno-based Plastic guys studio. We supplied, shaped, and installed the materials in collaboration with our partners.
The PET plastic sheets were chosen for their aesthetic potential, ability to be thermoformed, seamless joinery for large-scale surfaces, and their transparently circular origin.
“Sustainability, design, and formability – that’s what mattered. I was intrigued by the idea of waste getting a second chance.”
architect Marek Teplický
Design that makes sense
In a time when architecture increasingly faces the demands of environmental responsibility, the Aupark information desk is a model example of how aesthetics and sustainability can be combined into a single cohesive concept.
“They like the idea of sustainability. It’s something different, something new.”
Peter Machata, co-author of the project
The material was selected for its resin-like structure, in this case using pure white granules. The result is an elegant surface with subtle veining and an effect reminiscent of marble or onyx – yet it is entirely made from plastic.
Where to see the project?
You can see the information desk in person during your visit to Aupark Bratislava, right at the main entrance. Shaped as a conical spiral, it serves not only as an aesthetic centerpiece but also as a functional feature – shielding employees from cold air drafts coming in from the entrance hall.
Plastic guys: A material for the future of architecture
This project proves that sustainable material doesn’t have to be a compromise. On the contrary – it offers new possibilities for shaping, visual expression, and added value. We at Plastic guys are proud to have been part of a project that demonstrates recycled materials deserve a rightful place in contemporary architecture.
